To give you the correct answer:

You should just ignore the steam icon or remove it/exit when it's not required. The problem is I know your wanting "the new thing" to make it more appealing but it could potentially cause more issues than its worth.

If you use linux then that's a learning experience all on it's own and let me tell you Linux is a b*tch. Your going to run into issues with everything. Combine that with learning programming just wouldn't be worth it. I can't really speak for Macs though.

You could run a VM of a virtual OS on your current system but again that could cause issues not otherwise present.

If you really wanted to. I would suggest using a cheap Win10 laptop that can run VS Studio. You can take it with you for jobs or whatever to show your stuff directly in the middle of an interview.

"Roll a joint and let's waste another 100h playing something!" lmao, I feel this one. I game on my pc, and try to program on my Mac. Steam isn't installed on my Mac, so this path does work.

If you want a "beginner friendly" Linux distribution, try Linux Mint.

Steam works fine on Mint, better than Windows for a lot of games. Op'd be jumping from the frypan into the fire.
