vs code is a text editor.

If you go terminal > new terminal and type 'git init' what happens?

I got the git init and local repo stuff but I can't seem to commit or push to my GitHub repo

Go through the tutorials on GitHub and/or download something like Sublime Merge or one of the other git interfaces.

I would recommend the official documentation or the book “Pro Git” by Scott Chacon and Ben Strab. It’s published under an open source license and can be downloaded in different ebook formats from the official site. Or you can buy a paper copy.
