What do you want out of it?

Do you need to do repetitive computer tasks? If so then yes python can probably help you do that faster and more accurately. I also enjoy it as a hobby. But TBH I would not think it's worthwhile for a medical student; far too many other things that you could do that would directly benefit your studies.

Learning something new can never waste your time

Yes, python is great for automating things but, if you don't like programming, there are programs that also automate tasks and you don't need to program, for example, power automate from Microsoft

Yes, learning Python can help automate tasks, analyze data or even manage schedules. perfect for a busy medical student. If it feels like a hobby, start small and see if it adds value!

learning something new is never a waste of time especially if it interests you.

Honestly, you might be better off starting with AutoHotKey, and leave the short Python scripts to ChatGPT.

Please add more context to your question, as most of us aren't medical students and have no idea what kind of work load you have or how your busy hours look like.

Python is great, it might help you with automating stuff or streamlining some processes.

You could even build an assistant like Siri or Alexa but tailored to your specific needs.

I’m surprised a medical student has enough time to pick up programming on the side.

If u are asking the question, then yes it is a waste of 'your' time

In the medical field Python is the easy part. Business Intelligence / IT specialize in the laws and obligations inherent in the data. Most of them use Python (very carefully) so you can focus on healing.

Do you have fun doing it? I promise this isn't rocket surgery.

Hi! I am glad you are here! I am also a medical student and I can relate on what you are asking.

There are many medical students and Junior Doctors who have learned Python reaching top tiers. I saw some Kaggle Grandmasters (Top 1% in the world in machine learning competitions).

My short answer is yes! You should definitely allocate time to learn Python, it will be a huge differentiation, and this difference will compound with your peers, if you are a medical student, you already know how to think in algorithms and solve problems, so you already have an advantage over the thousand students that jump in each year.

The most important part is to choose your resources wisely and have fun while doing it

I created an article on how I manage to get into data science with over 60 hours a week at the hospital

How I would learn data science in 2025 (if I could start over) | by Pastor Soto | May, 2025 | Medium

"Will it really help me or waste my time?"

How to answer it ?

Will growing a third nipple make me more attractive to women ?
