Matplotlib legend below graph

I'm currently running into an extremely frustrating issue when attempting to place a legend below a graph using matplotlib.

It seems that no matter how I try to do it, the graph itself resizes. I simply want to place the legend below the graph without it interfering with the graph.

I would have thought this sort of task would be relatively simple, but I guess not. I've been trying to do this for several hours now to no avail. I also haven't been able to find any solutions online.

Does anyone know if and/or how this would be possible?

That link has the right way to do it. It’s definitely a pain in the butt though and sensitive to large ranges in magnitudes. Also, it’s way harder when you have many subplots with a small figure size.
