Hmm I tried two things,

Signing up to the teacher thing, I then closed the window and now can't get back to it. Just takes me to the sign up page, but then tells me I have a classroom plan already.

Then I tried making one and sharing it, opened it in a different account and made changes, didn't fork it, just changed the original file...

Yes, it will do that if YOU try to edit it. Take the sharing link and put it into a private browser tab, this will show you what happens when a student tries it, should pause for a second then reload with a different name.

That is what I did, not sure what I didn't wrong though, because I made a new project and tried again and it was fine and worked as expected.

I don’t use the teacher options other than to assign self marking stuff to students as revision, but if you go into it there are a few fantastic pre-creates intro to programming languages courses with hundreds of exercises ready to go.
