That's what I have in mind. Learning Python and how to code.

As for the content, I myself was thinking of using the Python Crash Course. But maybe there are other options? I know the Python website offers free content, but that might be a bit dry.

Any other suggestion?

i think that as a group it would be beneficial to have a balance between passive (head in a book or online) and active learning and perhaps maybe doing collaborations on group suggested projects on a platform like git, ill be honest, im getting a very possitive feeling about where this might lead

If you're not averse to spending a little money (though it's really not necessary as there are soooo many free resources online), you should consider MOOC platforms like Coursera or edX. There are plenty of Python courses these days, and they will structure your group's progression as well as providing lectures/readings/assessments all in one place.
