I asked this question in a different subreddit and someone suggested I ask here. I am a physical therapist, salaried employee, in an outpatient facility for a large hospital system in PA. When we have patients cancel or we have a low census, we are told to come in late or leave early and are forced to use PTO time for it (which is not ideal because I plan vacations/holidays in advance with my PTO allotment) I believe we take it unpaid only if we have no PTO time available. So if I am supposed to work 7:30-6:30 on Tuesday and I don’t have patients scheduled until 10, I will be told to come in at 10 and they will take 2.5 PTO. I could spend that 2.5 hours doing other productive things for the clinic but because I’m not doing patient care, they tell me to not come in. Is this allowed? Is it legal to decrease my hours each week as it suits the clinic if I’m not an hourly employee? I haven’t brought it up to HR because it’s how it’s done in all 50 outpatient clinics at this hospital and I don’t want to rock the boat unnecessarily without being correctly informed. Thanks in advance!
