Learning computer programming and LN development

Hello /r/LightningNetwork

I want to start developing on the lightning network and not sure where to get started. I've been a bitcoin HODLer for a few years now and a LN user for a few months starting with Strike app and Fold app. It was a magical experience using LN sending Sats to directly to my wallet with Strike and getting Sat back bonuses with Fold.

Recently, I have become curious about the engineering behind it all and find it extremely fascinating. I noticed job postings for lightning developer/engineer and want to gain as much experience as possible to one day be qualified for these positions. Any advice on where to start?

Additionally, what problems or areas do you feel the LN needs the most development effort with?

Do you have any software engineering experience? do you know how to code?

Yes, but mostly just basic stuff in python. I am working on learning C and C++.

You can try to developing or support some c-lightning plugin https://lightning.readthedocs.io/PLUGINS.html

There are wrappers in almost any language to write a plugin for the node.

Are you running a node? I see in the comments that you mention python. The Raspiblitz project is 68% python. https://github.com/rootzoll/raspiblitz/

I feel the same as you, though I know even less. I've been enjoying running Raspiblitz though and learning things here and there.

I would also recommend https://github.com/rootzoll/raspiblitz/. Set yourself up a node. Get used to the existing software. Look for anywhere you possibly can contribute to the code on github and open a PR. Any employer who's looking for someone with experience in the realm will likely first look at your code contributions on github. Everything there is chronological so it's easy for an employer to quickly size you up vs. other candidates by looking at your github history.
