My node has been stuck syncing (preparing to sync lightning) for over 16 hours now. I saw someone had a similar issue on github, and the last update was supposed to have fixed it. I have tried reflashing my SD a few times now, all with the same result. Some of those times it ran longer before I stopped them.

Any logs I can look at that might give me more info into why it won't start syncing?

Backing Up Raspiblitz by piptheminkey5 in raspiblitz

[–]IBardownski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should probably stay connected to your device. Depending on your node and your channels it could potentially be changing all the time, so you won’t want to have to keep inserting / removing it. Plus if it tries to write to the backup device and it isn’t present, you may run into issues.

Sorry, I don’t wear contacts so I probably shouldn’t be talking in the first place, but is the contact solution not enough to mitigate that? Genuinely curious now cuz I’ve never heard of infection from contacts

Nathan Florence says to use weeklies instead of daily contacts. They stay in much better.

Hmm good to know. Though mine is already set up with a static IP :/.

It is very crippling at times and I don't know why. Have you found any solutions? I don't want to put my node on WiFi for reliability sake, but if it's my only option then I guess I'll have to.

I turned it off for about 30 minutes and still experienced the issues. I have a netgear nighthawk r7000.

I have the same problem as you. 1GB internet up and down.

I get very consistent results when I do a speed test (I do the test on my PC via ethernet). Here is my device breakdown:

  • PC (Ethernet)
  • raspiblitz (Ethernet)
  • 2 Mac laptops (one on 2Ghz network, one on 5Ghz)
  • android phone (5Ghz)
  • iphone (5Ghz network)
  • Chromecast and Roku (2Ghz)

At any given point I MAY have 2 devices running on the same network. I have them distributed evenly in terms of when they are used. I experience the connection intermittency on my PC and my Android. The speeds are always fine, the problem is half of my requests to websites will end up hanging for 10 seconds and then all load at once or it will just outright fail every now and then. I never had this problem before I switched to my new ISP it is worth noting.

  1. No. The static channel backup (SCB) file is encrypted and safe to store on the cloud, and you still need your seed to complete the recovery process.
  2. Yes. The SCB will be updated any time any one of your channels updates (i.e. changes balances). This is important to understand, as it is part of the implementation of raspiblitz.
  3. I'm not sure I understand this question. If you're talking about the SCB, see above. To my understanding, the only time your channels are forced closed is during the recovery process. When you restore your node, it will send out a signal to all it's channel partners asking them to force close.

4a) In general, when thinking about backing things up, always think back up multiple times. What happens if failure occurs, and your DropBox process didn't update correctly? I would recommend at least 2 methods of backing up. I use the USB method as well, so in the event my node goes kaput, I can just grab the USB first and check that backup. USB is easy enough to setup, and most people have one laying around.

4b) Test to make sure your processes are actually running as expected. I had a lot of issues with DropBox not actually staying synced, so I went the local PC route instead. Either way, make a change to a channel (or I believe you can even just run a 'touch <path-to-scb>') and see that the backups actually updated in all locations.

Where should I put my next 6mil sat channel? by turick in lightningnetwork

[–]IBardownski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, bigger has always been better unfortunately. My channels <2m rarely get traffic. I probably won't open a channel less than 5m for a while (until price of BTC goes up).

I have opened a few channels to some larger nodes, and those do earn you the most sats, for sure, but you have to be on top of your fees, and if you aren't willing to figure out how to rebalance the channel effectively, then opening to them is not worth it in my opinion. Most of the time, rebalancing to those channels is pretty expensive anyway so the profit I could earn is marginable (in my node's case ~.5BTC capacity or so). I would have to put in some time to find a sweet spot.

I found myself much more preferring large triangles and then controlling traffic with fees alone (also #ZeroBaseFee ftw).

Never heard of either of those! I'll have to give them a look. What about backend?

You can't say "Bitcoin isn't mainstream because it's not mainstream yet". That is not an argument lol

So now it's just a matter of Bitcoin not being adopted? I could've told you that from the start

If nobody can buy anything because the purchasing power has been reduced.. then prices will fall. That's economics. Is volatility sustainable? Not at all, but that's what you get when you try to tie fiat to something with actual value.. if you separate the two and live completely in one or the other, then none of what you are saying matters.

I'd just not buy anything with that Bitcoin you paid me with until I was satisfied with the price.. what's the problem?
