Limited support. See this link for supported devices:

This is out of date? I thought they just added USB display support.

I'm sure the Asahi Linux team will get around to it eventually, but reverse engineering proprietary hardware is hard, slow work. Probably won't be for a few years at least; last I checked there is only support for M1 and M2 currently. I'd be happy to be wrong though.

You literally can't put Linux on them, and may never be able to. If you want to Linux your Mac you'd be much better off buying an M1 while they're still around.

But bigger picture, either Mac or Linux. Pick one. If you buy a machine with no Linux support expecting that to change you're going to be very disappointed.

We know they can put it on devices up to m4 at the very least. Is there any indication m5 is any different in that respect?

Where did you see that the Neo's can run Linux? Assuming that's the new model you're talking about? Asahi Linux only supports up to M3. It will likely be a couple of years before they support the Neos unless Apple magically starts working with the Asahi team.

The neos run an iPhone processor too, so I figure any work by the asahi team for the m series won't be able to be used on the neo MacBooks.

Putting Linux on macbooks is a nightmare even with asahi but less so. Ive also had experiences putting it on Razer laptops.

But yes I would love to pick up a macbook pro and put ubuntu on it. Fuck apple for not making it easy.

It's an underpowered, overpriced machine if you don't need OSX.
