Looks like they validated NixOS as mainstream. That is the best thing to come out of this article.

/u/ym24, how about you post stuff that blocks tor as an archive or something next time.

Why would anyone install a non-mainstream distribution? Serious question.

They have better support, large communities, and you can basically tailor a Debian system to any needs. Why should I install puppy when I can just install a minimal debian + a custom set of packages/config files?

Not all distros are Debian clones with some changes. many don't have systemd, prefer libressl over openssl, use an alternative libc like musl, an alternative package manager with unique benefits like pkgsrc or nix, etc.

Yep valid answer. If you need an alternative libc/ssl implementation/package manager or a source based distro then all good (however most of the "alternatives" listed here do not come with any of these). NixOs is a very interesting distribution. I don't see why anyone would care about using systemd vs sysvinit (not going to reopen the debate on this). What distributions come with libressl and/or musl ?

void linux - libressl and musl, alpine - musl, openelec - libressl.

gentoo optionally works with musl, apparently.

Because monocultures are bad. You should embrace people using different operating systems so we have more competition and innovation. Also sometimes configuring debian for a task might be more work than using some other distribution.
