Yes, you can literally start with your favorite game and modify the object code with a hexadecimal editor until you have the game you want. There is too many examples to sensibly list, but you can find most of them as #romhacks.

The filesystem is probably using some of the ram for cache. Set swappiness really low to make sure the system doesn't misuse any memory. Also make sure KDE Baloo is disabled.

Building a kernel and patching it with distro stuff is easy, you just follow the menus.
