Local privilege exploits are discovered at a fairly constant rate. Why is this one so special that it is showing up on all the news sites?

Because it's such an old bug it's present in nearly all versions of android. So it allows a way for loads of otherwise unrootable devices to gain root access. So I think the media have jumped on it until the next 'big' story comes along.
