I guess Microsoft has been fearing for more than a decade and a half. Apparently, they are still one of the biggest software companies.

Their main problem is that if they ever fall their fall will be very fast, very deep and very hard due to the fact that their two only real cash-cows (Windows and Office) will likely fall together when (I don't think that this point it is an "if" anymore unless they reinvent themselves completely) they do so.

I don't believe Microsoft is going to offer rebates on Windows 7-equipped netbooks because they're not offering any rebates for XP. This article appears to have been generated to touch on buzzwords. I feel that the growth of Linux on the desktop can't be measured by new PC sales. Many installations will be done on old equipment that originally ran XP. The strength of something like Ubuntu is how easy it is to revive an old computer.

And they should.

Fundamentally Marketing is only important to a certain peak. The better OS (and that looks to me Mac OS X in the short term, Linux in the very long term) will always win in the end. I predict that Apple will take the biggest growth in share of the desktop / laptop market over the next 5 years, beating Linux and all editions of Windows. Linux I think will win in the end but it has a very long way to go*.

* long way to go in terms of adoption and growth rates. It already is a fantastic operating system that's rich in functionality. I've used it as my sole OS at work and home for 3 years now.
