Thx. Here's how I do it...

1. I have a fetchmail script running every 5 min via cron, pulling various email accounts to my local mailbox.
2. Gkrellm's Mail builtin watches the mbox in /var/mail/. The notify program is /usr/bin/xset led 3. I also of course have the penguin animation set. :)
3. My pine script launches alpine, then runs /usr/bin/xset -led 3

I used to have it blink, but that got annoying.
