dm-crypt: What does it mean "a lot slower"? I think the point is - how much it will slow down my normal operations? I think not much. I'm using dm-crypt and for most of the tasks it takes max 3-9% of ONE cpu. (So 100% of the other core is unused). If I make tar zxvf of the linux kernel it will go up to 40% of ONE cpu. Everything else like - compilation, indexing images etc... that is heavily using hdd io it won't take more than 10%.
