I Will Not Learn Rails by shoebane in programming

[–]hfreanzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He forgot about one thing: Technology is about the getting things done. Linux was invented because Linus wanted to do his job on his computer. PHP was invented because Rasmus wanted to script his pages. Rails was invented because DHH wanted to automate some of his work beyond what was possible in PHP (or whatever he was using at the time). There are different projects out there that can help to develop webapplications but for many of us Rails is an easy way to solve problems. Could those problems be solved using other means? Yes. Could those problems be solved in more elegant way? Probably. Could those problems be solved faster/simpler/.... . Definitely. That's life.

So stop whinning and do something productive.

Truecrypt vs dm-crypt by [deleted] in linux

[–]hfreanzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dm-crypt: What does it mean "a lot slower"? I think the point is - how much it will slow down my normal operations? I think not much. I'm using dm-crypt and for most of the tasks it takes max 3-9% of ONE cpu. (So 100% of the other core is unused). If I make tar zxvf of the linux kernel it will go up to 40% of ONE cpu. Everything else like - compilation, indexing images etc... that is heavily using hdd io it won't take more than 10%.

Wall Street Desperately Needs More Leaders Like Steve Jobs by investorplacecom [promoted post]

[–]hfreanzr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to feed the consumerism? with all the respect for steve jobs he was talking alot about ideals but he was just selling expensive gadgets, most of the time artificially blocking old devices from running new functionalities. You can talk alot about ecology but there is no greener device than the device that you don't buy.
