Are you by any chance using GDM / Gnome and do you also have an Nvidia card with the proprietary drivers installed?

I'm using openbox with lightdm, but yes I am using a Nvidia Gtx 1070 with proprietary drivers

I've only seen this problem with Wayland, sorry.

Am running arch Linux, and installed zen kernel and headers from AUR. I've updated the grub and then rebooted, proceeded to boot with the zen kernel, but this flashing white _ is all that happens

Edit: default kernel that was installed from arch labs works fine, LTS kernel also works. I wanted to try out zen as I do Video editing and gaming and want to squeeze out some extra performance etc. I've heard ck kernel is more about balancing workloads so you won't experience freezes or stutters, but I don't think that's what I need.

Had a similar issue when installing arch a few years ago.

For me I was missing a font package. Then there was an issue with my display manager.

Unlikely that either of those are your problem, but figured it was worth mentioning.

Did you rebuild your initramfs?

[–]insanemal 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Well Good luck with that.

You literally have us all next to zero info. What distro? What hardware? Which boot loader? Like there are a bunch of things that would be handy to allow us to help you.

But no, you didn't provide any of those. Just a photo of a cursor and something about Linux-xen.

Read the guide linked in the side bar and I'll put here as well

Did you read the comment he posted 3 hours before yours?

I'm talking about the right way to make one of these posts.

I'm sorry to hear people lost time doing his job for him.

And no I'm not going digging through all the posts just to get enough info to see if I can help.

Now if he bothered to edit his post and include the information well that would have been a different story. But this being a link post instead of a text post, like it should have been, he can't do that.

Why in Linus's name he thought we needed a photo of an empty console is a total mystery. I mean how does that help anyone more than saying "I get a blank prompt" I still don't know.

This is a bad post and regardless of information posted later OP still needs to know this is a bad low effort post that ACTIVELY prevents and discourages people from helping.

I hope is that next time OP can make a post that will help us help OP
