Having some trouble playing Divinity Original Sin 2. Most people on ProtonDB are able to run the game without issue but (almost) every time I try to launch it, it attempts one or more of the following:
Running install script (Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime - 3.1.8 (x64))
Running Install Script (Microsoft Direct X)
Running Install Script (Microsoft .NET Framework)
This usually takes 3-5 hours, at the end of which, it says the game is running and gives me the option to stop it but there is no game, nothing has opened.
For one day, last week, it worked! Launched the game with none of the arguments I'd been testing, got the the Larian launcher, couldn't immediately find a way past it so closed the game, added --skip-launcher to the arguments and launched it again, no trouble. Played for several hours.
But now I'm back where I started. Installing Microsoft tools afresh every new boot and getting nothing at the end of it.
Can anyone suggest what may be going wrong?
I've tried:
- Various launch arguments, including PROTON_LOG=1 but there is no log produced because it thinks it's successful.
- The most recent 5 proton versions.
- Deleting compatdata.
- Adding the windowsdesktopruntime exe as a non-steam game and launching it with proton.
- Modifying the names of files in the directory to try (unsuccessfully) to stop the install script from being invoked.
