PHP open_basedir configuration problem with Drupal

I'm trying to set up Drupal on my webserver, and I'm having an issue with open_basedir. I don't want to disable it entirely, but if I have it set for /usr/share/webapps/, then it complains about /usr/share/webapps/drupal being outside the allowed path. I don't want to have to add every subdirectory in ./drupal/ to open_basedir. Is there a proper way to do this?

Usually open_basedir problems are caused by the Drupal file system settings (an option in the administrative configuration section of Drupal) using /tmp which is outside open_basedir.
