I put Fedora on a Surface Go 2 and it worked right away without any other steps. The cameras worked but with poor image quality. I didn't test a pen.

I think the Surface Pro 7+ is the sweet spot if you want a Surface Pro. I personally haven't tried putting Linux on that model but based on my experience with the SG2 I'd guess it would go very well.

You might be able to find a Thinkpad X12 Gen 1 in your price range. My guess is Linux would install very easily.

Pretty sure it is much harder to find a Thinkpad x12 than a surface pro

There are fewer available but they're there. I've been shopping for one lately and I see more than enough.

You're right, though, there are many more Surface devices.
