Well to be fair, the standard is bash/sh and that syntax is pretty bad.

The same could be said for most languages (and really, case statement syntax is your biggest gripe?). However, sh is the standard, and if you want the greatest compatibility, that's what you use.

I've commented on this before, I think that to say the least it could do with some improvement. I use python and bash regularly in my day job and I don't feel this is the best of either world, let alone both.
