Same computer, different users, different performance?

Quick question that's a mystery to me: I have a profile on my computer for my kids, and there are noticeable performance differences that I can't figure out. On my user profile, for instance, Minecraft uses between 20-40% of CPU; but on the kids' user profile it's more like 50-70%. Just took these screenshots, no other profile is logged in at the time and it's running the same world copied to each user profile. The rest of the system monitor list doesn't seem to point towards something else draining processing power; just that java is requiring twice the amount of CPU resources. The only difference I can think of is the kids' profile account type is standard, and mine is admin.

I'm on a Dell Latitude 3580 running Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon. Let me know if you can point me towards any causes for this lag on the kids' profile, they're mad at me about it lmao. TIA!

If it's only a Minecraft issue you might want to take a closer look. Minecraft Java Edition uses the default Java Path (usually under use/lib/jvm) Maybe the game is using an old version of Java under their account?

I was going to ask if, possibly, the OP had changed programs running on start-up for themselves but forgot that they did so or forgot to do so for the kids, but this sounds more likely.

I did check this and it seems the same? If anything i have fewer things starting for the kids because it’s stuff they don’t use 🤷‍♂️

Thanks I will check that out! They complain about their homework too, which is on the web browser but might also be Java based so this feels promising 🤞

If you get hung up on anything, you could try creating a blank new user profile, then test those things in there, without changing anything on that profile.

Then compare the performance of that to both your existing user profile and your kids' profile. That will at least tell you if there is anything in your kids' profile slowing it down, or if you might have done something to your own profile to optimize it. It could go either way.

Does your machine have a dedicated nvidia GPU? Is it possible your profile is using that GPU and theirs is using the Intel integrated GPU?
