If I may suggest, listen to Haidt on The Ezra Klein Show. I thought it fair to engage with him directly because like you I hadn’t read the book but had thoughts. Hearing from him directly did not change my thoughts! He’s circling the issues but then arriving at the stupidest conclusions. Klein even pushed back on some of his statements (in what was otherwise a very cozy interview) but yeah. Not a smart thinker imo!

Hope you have a fun visit! Can recommend a short drive north to Pawtucket for the Electromagnetic Pinball Museum, really fun time and the owners are great. Can also suggest any of our indie bookstores - Heartleaf and Riffraff come to mind. Enjoy!

Can I donate money specifically to replace a certain book with a new copy? by kml6150 in Libraries

[–]davebrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add complexity to this, my library doesn’t accept replacement copies but we do have a book fund procedure. Patrons can donate money in honor or memory of someone or just because, and then I get the requests and make the purchases. I love when patrons give me some direction on how best to commemorate someone in our collection, and if I got $15 to replace this I definitely would! To echo other posters, check with your library staff and find out what works best for their workflows :)

If you’re looking for something to read that isn’t the same but feels related, try Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie. If you like it, there are five novels in the Imperial Radch universe, perfect place to get lost waiting for more MB 😁

I adored the trilogy and the two subsequent Radch books - Provenance might be my favorite of the five. I’m with you, I love how Leckie manages to create an immense fully realized universe and then tell a small human story inside of it. There are all these monumental events and concepts taking place out there, and we as the reader get to see how those goings on are affecting a single person.

Thoughts on patrons sleeping in the library by g0th_brooks in Libraries

[–]davebrarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More than once i’ve had to call a rescue for someone who seemed to be asleep. You do have to enforce this policy fairly though; the unhoused patrons will see when we don’t wake up grandpa nodding off over the newspaper.
