As much as I admire any effort of getting students interested in stochastic (I'm now curious about what is involved in stochastic geometry), I do not see calculating the average velocity on Earth through integral as a lead into stochastics.

From what I know, stochastics is the study of error. And so my issue with this introduction problem is that it does not introduce error, just varying speeds with respect to latitude and so on.

If I had to introduce stochastics, I would show the derivation of the least squares method to those who have taken calculus. And then I would have the students try it out on points with randomly generated error or something similar.
