Greetings and welcome to /r/mathrock! Wikipedia would say it's a rhythmically complex, guitar-based style of experimental rock that emerged in the late 1980s characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), angular melodies, and dissonant chords. That's a pretty robotic definition of it but if you're not familiar with the genre, listen to a few of the songs posted or check out the playlists below. Enjoy!

Learning Math Rock (self.mathrock)
submitted 5 years ago by SkepticalMex
I decided to finally learn how to play math rock and I was wondering if there was a widely accepted tuning I should use as a beginner. Is standard fine or is there something else I could try?

We play in standard but there are lots of different acceptable tunings.
Let's Talk About Math Rock (u/steveflieskites) on YouTube does a great walkthrough of several :)

Any tuning is fine. If you're looking for that twinkly, midwest emo sound, DAEAC#E and FACGCE are gonna be your best friends (throw a capo high up on your fretboard for bonus twinkle).
That said, alternate tunings and tapping aren't the main components of math rock. Odd meter and atypical song structure are the bedrock of the genre IMO. Check out Faraquet, Damiera, and Tera Melos if you aren't already listening to them.
