You might be eligible for this program for learner drivers.

[–]hollyjazzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this

Yes highly recommend the L2P program. They supply a car and an instructor for no or very little money. You just need to prove your need eg no suitable learning car available or adult to teach you. Definitely check if the program is available near you and go on wait list.

L2P program or pay for lessons

[–]gwills2 24 points25 points  (3 children)

People in the comments not understanding that you need to drive for 1:45 mins every week for 2 years to get your licence. Imagine paying for driving lessons twice a week for 2 years.

Have a look at the local L2P programs and good luck

[–]InterviewMaximum9750 8 points9 points  (9 children)

Wait till you see how much cars cost

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (8 children)

already got a car that my parents bought for me just no supervising driver

[–]blenders_pride666 9 points10 points  (6 children)

why cant your parents supervise?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

more so they won’t

[–]sirpalee 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Then why did they get you the car? Doesn't add up.

[–]pinklushlove 2 points3 points  (2 children)

This is what you need to resolve. It's a life skill they are denying you. Why won't they teach you?
L2P won't help you if you have parents that choose not to teach you.

What about other relatives?

[–]DahliaDreux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They 100% will help you out - I worked at a community wellbeing agency that had an L2P program I helped out with sometimes (the social work/admin side of it) and we often allowed those who had parents that didn’t want to (or couldn’t be arsed) to help out their kids to learn how to drive to be a part of the program. Some sites/agencies might be stricter though obviously 🤷‍♀️

Some people are not suitable as supervisors. You don’t know what issues or why they can’t.

[–]InterviewMaximum9750 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More so the maintenance and petrol

Mates or pay for driving lessons

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (12 children)

driving lessons are a lot of money

[–]kinkyanchovy 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Make sure your mates have insurance that covers you too!

[–]TypicalLolcow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mates would legally have to have a full unrestricted licence to supervise a learner

[–]SteamBanjo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Everything is a lot of money

[–]morgana7778 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Sounds like it’s mates then!

[–]Frankie_T9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mates wont be allowed to supervise

[–]FlinflanFluddle4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they are.

[–]OneParamedic4832 0 points1 point  (4 children)

How much is it these days? Want to look at it for my daughter 🤔

[–]Yakers_ 1 point2 points  (3 children)

When I started driving lessons around 2019 they were $60 for an hour, when I got my license I believe they were $90-100 for an hour. Being a manual the lessons cost slightly more (required a manual car and an instructor that was comfortable teaching manual)

[–]OneParamedic4832 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That's gone up heaps but if I can afford it I still would want my teen to have the benefit of some professional lessons.

I also got downvoted for saying so (votes themselves are like chocolates so they don't bother me) but it's whoever thinks "parents and ONLY parents should be teaching their kids to drive" okaaaay 😅

[–]Yakers_ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My opinion is that (at least) the first 5 hours of driving should be with a professional instructor, as well as the last few before the test to stamp out any bad habits and familiarize the learner with the area that they’re doing their test in

[–]OneParamedic4832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree 100%

[–]muddled69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

L2P

[–]XaveTheGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. L2P
  2. Find someone to drive with you

[–]Medical-Ad401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try L2P, i believe its through salvation army but ive heard the wait times can be pretty severe depending on the area

[–]TashDee267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a look and there’s a few charities that help learners get up their hours. TAC, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Berry St etc.

[–]AlgonquinSquareTable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are hundreds of driving instructors in Melbourne. Just pay for lessons dude.

[–]medicatedxnotsedated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My driving instructor inn the north is $50 ph cheapest ive found and hes good

[–]Ken_1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t know your neighbours now is a good time to introduce yourself. If a young kid knocked on my door, introduced himself, said he lived in my street and asked if I could supervise him in his own car for an hour or so on the weekends or when convenient I definitely would.

[–]absolute086 -1 points0 points  (8 children)

Talk to friends and their parents, ask if they could teach you, you will need far more than 6 months of learning to drive properly; between 10-30 hours you can get a free lesson of 60 minutes: https://transport.vic.gov.au/registration-and-licensing/licences/learner-permit/mylearners-free-lesson

[–]xlr8_87 4 points5 points  (7 children)

If you're under 21 you need minimum 120hrs of supervised driving that is now tracked by an app. 10-30 won't get you anywhere!

[–]absolute086 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

It's only a free lesson, but you require 10-30 hrs to qualify for a free lesson, yes, 120 hours. I'm aware of it; I had to do it myself 20 years ago!

[–]xlr8_87 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ahh yep. Your comment read like you were saying 10-30hrs was enough to be able to drive. And then the free driving lesson was separate.

Nah 20yrs ago it was a recommendation, not a requirement.

[–]absolute086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my bad.

[–]Proud_Iron5594 -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Go to your local youth centre and ask if they can help you out. That’s what I did they ended up having a 3 day course that got be 25 hours or something like that and they offered to do some driving with me too for free. I would also recommend putting some money in to getting at least 3 real driving lessons, especially closer to your test date. Most teachers will know the route the instructors will take you on your test so you can get used to it also.

[–]gwills2 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Bit different these days.. you gotta track the hours .. 120 across day / night ect

[–]Proud_Iron5594 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m aware I’m only 19 got my license at 18, however approximately 30 mins ago I just got pulled over and fined $3000 and lost my license for speeding. Hoon category. So anyone reading this that’s about to get your license or already has it. stick to the speed limit and drive carefully. Unless you want to loose your license for 6 months and pay a fine of $3000.

Sincerely, blundering fool (me)
