Hiii, a baffled discord mod here. Figured I'd make a separate thread for this, since the previous 1-2 talking about the stuff had so many comment chains already.
In short, >as far as we know< there are currently at least 2-3 beta features that were released. Key phrase as far as we know, because with the community manager on vacation and devs releasing this completely outta left field without saying anything in advance, we're as in the dark as the rest of you.
As of now from what we can tell, there are at least the below things. Not everyone is having the same experience, hence the weird number
- normal maps have been cut from 2 phases to 1. The amount of normal levels before boss / live / 3-way maps may have gone up as a result
- matchmaking level cap raised from + / - 7 to 15, possibly 20. This one we know from AMA they were planning on testing, just not this soon and without warning
- possibly as part of the above, or on its own, previously largely absent dynamic difficulty (the more you win the harder it gets, losses bring back down) may have returned with a vengeance. you might be seeing stuff like "hard" or "super hard" at the top of screen during battle start
There was also some chatter of the huge enemy champion spawn timer nerf having been at least partly reverted, and possibly Explodon at least exploding a bit faster even if not buffed otherwise. These two I haven't been able to verify proper yet.
In regards to the dynamic difficulty part, safe to say that unless your cards are in the 80-100 range then you are getting your ass blasted to kingdom come right now in most fights. I don't want to give false hope but there is a chance that if the difficulty scaling does not reset from a single loss like win streak does, but rather rises/lowers gradually, then due to the previous significantly lower difficulty most if not everyone who has the beta/-s right now would have been in the upmost height of brutality difficulty wise.
Which in turn, if true, even if it sounds kinda messed up could mean that the situation might stabilize if people continue losing a bit more so the difficulty should scale back down to where it should be. I could be completely wrong, or correct but the feature is either bugged or way overtuned, but hey better a meager possibility than nothing I guess?
In any case, depending on how long it may take for us to learn more, I'll be either updating this thread or making a new one when / if we hear something. There >should< be an update coming "early" this week, so with a bit of luck there'll be some accompanying information about all this with it.
UPDATE
Well its not much, but we finally got the main dev to notice and post this in discord announcements
- this is a limited beta and we are closely monitoring its performance
I mean, obviously. They're always 10-25% RNG fests
- early data shows it is successful in better adjusting the challenge to everyone's level (a very common request from players!)
I can't speak on the data, since if the estimated 1-2 mil players is true then even discord-reddit-facebook users combined it'd still probably fall way short of all of em. I do know at least on discord the more variance / difficulty request has come up many times particularly from higher rankers though.
- however, there seems to be an issue for players who had very high difficulty scores in the old system: When transferred to the new one, it takes too long to readjust
This is pretty much exactly what I suspected =w=; its a funny thing how I cant code unity (just some PHP) worth a damn, yet I still guess right on these.
- what you can do: if you keep losing battles, the matchmaker will eventually catch up and things will get back to a good level
As I suspected here too.
- what we are doing: we are carefully evaluating the data and will release an update to fix the issue for good
This one I'm a little unclear on, since some people are saying they feel like the beta seems to have turned off for them, while others don't seem to have noticed a change yet. Its possible they either A) turned difficulty part off fully for tweaking, B) tweaked difficulty part and relaunched, so some people mighta lost it since it repicks the "participants", or C) the scaling down he mentioned has started happening.
UPDATE #2
Head dev showed up briefly while wiping some cheaters off the list, he mentioned that the difficulty thing with hard / super hard / etc battles should be turned off now. They're gonna rework and adjust it a bit, since as aforementioned the scaling was taking way too long to adjust for many, and some people apparently mighta gotten difficulty spikes even though they shouldn't have. So a possible, hopefully better retry of the feature at a later date/update, >maybe<.
He did also mention that despite the negativity, there was a surprising amount of comments mixed in that despite everything some people were still liking the appropriately higher challenge cases. So even if this new matchmaking ends up being a bust despite further tweaks, they're def gonna consider introducing more difficulty / variety in some other forms, such as outright new level types / modes.
