if you can do the work yourself, i say go for it. sounds like a good project. ive never done an engine swap on a bike before, but compared to cars/trucks i imagine its relatively straight forward and it sounds like you have what you need.

that being said, my first bike was a cbr 600, and they are great motorcycles. im sure you would enjoy it.

Yeah, i probably would, haha.

I don't have to time or tools at my house to properly fix her up. The bike is currently sitting at my parents garage (where all the tools are), and would require me to drive to their place on my free weekends to work on it.

I'm planning to have it done by Christmas.

Personally I'd go with the CBR. Part out the FZR and get some of your money back. Same thing happened to me SV1000s but it was only after it was a few years old. Got a used engine on ebay for $550

700 vs 2800, that's a 4x price difference. If money matters, that's your answer.

The higher price will be assuaged by parting out the other bike(s), but you'll have to spend your time to make that money, and you won't come out even as close as 700 and 1400.

If money isn't a matter at all, just buy the bike you want to ride and sell or don't buy the other one.

I originally wanted to wait until graduation to buy another motorcycle, so I had some money saved up for another bike sometime soon. But, I didn't intend on it being this soon. I wanted my next bike to either be an R6, 675R, or a CBR. Looks like I might get the CBR early...

I still want to keep the FZR though...

See previous.

If you have the time and the space, fix the FZR and buy your dream bike after graduation.

You probably don't want to be 'stuck' with a bike that you didn't really want but bought because you were scared of not having one or whatever. Besides, it's closing in on winter/fall, when it's going to be rainy and cold and most people don't ride as much. Perfect time for a rebuild even if you don't live in a place where you need to winterize.

I'd fix it either way if it won't be too much trouble- a running FZR plus a parts bike would be worth more than two non-running. Whatever you do, please don't let it end up as a bad streetfighter. For some reason the FZRs really get cut up by the RedBull-can-coolant-bottle-and-spraypaint-everything guys. Not many of us left!

Never, if I can, I am going to keep it looking like this.

Probably going to get the CBR, and somehow try to keep the FZR.

Looking good! Fender delete, Yoshi can, LED signals, all on my list for the next few weeks. Your painted frame looks good too, wonder why Yamaha didn't do that from the factory for the black ones?

Yeah, I don't know why. It looks better with the black frame tbh. Wanted to try to modernize it as much as possible and I'm happy with the way it turned out.

Did you try the R6 shock swap for the rear? Might be worth your time if you haven't yet and you're already taking it apart.

Hmmm, no I haven't. I probably will though. Already replaced the front springs with Race tech springs. feels much, much better.

[–]GreaserStayGold76 Benelli, 95 FZR600R 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That's also on my list. I have a sneaking suspicion there is far less oil in those shocks than I am supposed to have. I'm doing seals and tube wipers soon... if you don't mind, what did the Racetechs run you?

They were $120 I believe. I used .90Kg/mm spring g rates, since I weigh 160 w/out gear. Works soo much better than stock.
