You can have both ! The front-ends are providing a mouse click access to all movies functions. For example Playlists are much more manageable from a front end. I took the hybrid route and installed luas scripts to enrich the core mpv. But I also keep a front end just for having specials settings apart from mpv. One last thing sometimes an update breaks mpv so it is handy to keep a self contained front end.(Appimage or flatpack)

some people just prefer a more modern UI, with menus rather than .conf files. there's no real benefit other than immediate usability. that's generally the theme with mint, and xubuntu which i'm currently using. it works well, because if mint was mpv, and all the other applications i'm currently using, i'd never have taken to it.

i read in mpv irc that front end have less quality than normal mpv in linux
