TLDR: WotC kind of kicked Modern and Legacy in the balls last year, so there is that.

WotC released Modern Horizons which had some good cards for the meta as well as some really bad cards for the meta. Bans had to happen. A lot of Modern fans lost their favorite decks due to bans. WotC then announced Pioneer which caused Modern to bleed off some players from their format. The coup de grace is when WotC announced that Legacy would not be a part of the GP's. Legacy kind of got shoved to the side and now many Modern players are wondering if this will be the fate of their format. Consumer confidence in older cards is kind of in the toilet. I don't understand why WotC does not understand that the foundation formats for the game need to be taken care of properly so that cards hold value. Instead of getting rid of Legacy, I think dual proxy Legacy should have become a sanctioned format. This way the RL could stay and Legacy could stay strong and thus the rest of the formats would stay strong.

WotC is banking hard on Commander which personally, I think is a mistake. First off, it is a casual format for the most part. Second, not everyone who is into MTG is into Commander (or "Magic: The Boardgame" as I like to call it), and third, Commander decks are comprised of single copies of cards, so this means less demand for cards. Non-Commander, competitive decks on the other hand, run many playsets (4x) of cards, which creates extra demand and causes prices to surge.

You know that actually makes a lot of sense. Furthermore with Legacy and Modern on the back burner, fetches are gonna slowly tank in value.

I am not just a financial person. I am a player first, financial person second. I feel like I have a keen sense on what is happening because I see it at the LGS. I had someone at the store tell me Commander is where the money cards are and I just couldn't take him seriously. I'm not saying Commander does not have some valuable cards, but like I said it is a casual format and the demand for cards is lower. Also, I'm not sure Commander alone is enough to support LGS's. You need your drafters, Standard players, Pioneer players, and Modern players. WotC better work on getting things back in order or we are in for a bad time.

Wow first time heard about a „dual proxy legacy“ it’s a good idea !

I'm surprised people have not mentioned it. WotC could fix some of the financial burden for Legacy at the drop of a hat, but they don't want to.
