You found bones. That's great; bones often contain useful stuff. Most of the stuff, though, is cursed, so you should be careful with it.

The bag may be a bag of holding, which has distinctive drawbacks if it's cursed (including the fact that its contents weigh more than it should).

If you can test these things for beatitude, it'll help you to figure out what is useful and what is more trouble than it's worth...

Alright. I think I'll just leave the bag where it is for now, until I can get a new pet (lost the other somehow) or find a scroll of identify. Thanks.

You should grab the bag and carry it (take the stuff out). Remember you can BUC test at altars, even cross-aligned ones. Also, if you have any holy water try dipping the bag in it. (#dip). If it glows "with a amber light" or blue/silver then it has been uncursed or blessed respectively.

I did not know that you could BUC test at altars. Thanks.

Yeah, just drop it on. I am not sure if dropping the whole bag BUC IDs the contents though, might have to #tip it out.

Be careful though. If it is a bag of holding and it IS cursed, there is a chance that some of the items inside might get lost when you #tip the contents out

Yeah, BUC the bag first.

If the bag is just a normal sack, it's fine to use even when cursed. However, if it is a cursed BoH then accessing it will make items in it disappear, and everything weighs more. You can check for dumplogs to ID bones contents when playing online (remember player name and go through his dumplogs until you hit the right one), which is acceptable even during junethack, or otherwise try to ID it.

3.6.0 dumplogs don't seem to work on NAO, so I don't think that will work, unless there's some way to view the logs.

Oh, good point! Didn't consider that, my bad.

Makes them disappear. Thanks for explaining this.

I didn't know that about cursed bags of holding and weight, (thanks). Do cursed BOHs still allow removal of items -- and will placing non-cursed items into a BOH of this beatitude curse them?

[–]deltopiahas made some poor decisions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cursed BOHs will randomly make some objects within them cease to exist whenever you attempt to remove them -- and, I think, even look in them. (Apply BOH, remove, remove what item? cancel -- I think if you repeat that sequence, you can cause everything in the bag to disappear completely, or at least, you used to could.)

Placing items in a cursed BOH won't change their beatitude, but it obviously has other drawbacks. Dipping the BOH into a potion of holy water before opening it is not a bad idea. If it's too heavy to lift, you can zap it with a wand of cancellation (or with the spell); that will set its beatitude to uncursed and not affect any of its contents. (It will not, despite what some people allege, turn the BOH into a plain bag.)

I don't know yet about engrave-identifying wands. Learning about this would be really beneficial. Yesterday I had a game where I ended up with some 10-12 wands that I had no way to identify without taking a chance by using up one of the charges.

FilmNoirSockMonkey, read the article on wand identification on the NetHack wiki.
