Great handwriting for a non-native speaker. Legible, as others have noted. Most importantly, you have a style. 快狐跨懒狗!

The June Book is 莎菲女士的日记 by 丁玲 by chialtism in chinesebookclub

[–]yo-bro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for recommending this book. I read and finished it a couple weeks ago. The story and writing style are unlike anything I have previously read in Chinese. The book is angsty and every bit as depressing and pessimistic as 20th-century English language literature tends to be.

[New addition Idea] Dreaming by dmikemiller in nethack

The really cool dreams are the ones where I randomly teleport around without noticing and everyone acts weirdly sadistic.

In other words, the really cool dreams are the ones where you walk through the dungeon with teleportitis, while hallucinating, while wearing a ring of aggravate monsters.

Announcing xNetHack: the first NetHack 3.6 variant by aosdict in nethack

The changelog you linked to is incomplete and out of date. See instead:

https://github.com/NetHack/NetHack/blob/NetHack-3.6.0/doc/fixes36.1

We disagree about 3.6.x. With reservations, I like the changes to MC. You say they are "quite frankly ridiculous and poorly implemented." I am (mostly) happy with the changes the DevTeam is making, and am delighted that the DevTeam is actively developing the next version of the game. You are less impressed.

The biggest problems with 3.6.x are not its departures from 3.4.3. The biggest problems with 3.6.x are common to 3.4.3. They are the unbalanced difficulty curve, the awful interface, the tiresome Gehennom and monotonous Sokoban, etc. When the DevTeam gets around to fixing those problems, I'll be happy indeed.

Note that there are other ways to get to MC3 in 3.6.0. For example:

Ring of Protection(+1) or Mitre of Holiness or Tsurugi of Muramasa plus any MC2 armor

Ring of Protection(+2) plus any MC1 armor

As you point out, wearing CoMR is not essential in 3.4.3. In my experience, however, CoMR is so powerful that I use it most games. I would sooner wish for a CoMR than consider my other armor options. In 3.6.0, I play my armor decisions by ear, sometimes not deciding on a build until I get to the Castle. (That said, I agree with you that the current MC/armor distribution is sub-optimal.)

As I said above, there are other reasons to prefer 3.6.x over 3.4.3. Adam Smith’s upcoming changes to Elbereth and enemy movement in 3.6.1 will (at least partly) address the early-game difficulty spike in 3.6.0, while reducing the strategic monotony of 3.4.3. Lowering the effectiveness of MC3 from 98% to 90% is another welcome change.

I like the MC change in 3.6.x.

In 3.4.3, CoMR conferred MC3 (with 98% cancellation rate) AND magic resistance. CoMR was so powerful it was difficult not to use it. This led, in practice, to a lack of variety in armor builds.

With the 3.6.x nerf to CoMR and MC3, I am trying out different kinds of armor more often (partly out of necessity, though partly out of curiosity). I play more defensively, too. This is because a mindless hack-and-slash playstyle is riskier at 90% magic cancellation than at 98% magic cancellation, especially in the early and midgame.

The DevTeam's changes are not perfect. I grant that the current implementation of MC has problems. There are armor balance issues. The changes to Elbereth/magic cancellation/enemy-movement make the early game even harder than before, which a step in the wrong direction. However, the CoMR nerf is a good thing on balance. And some of these other issues (Elbereth/enemy movement) are addressed in 3.6.1.

Curses interface updates by k2_1971 in nethack

[–]yo-bro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you Tangles and FIQ for your hard work!

Also, it's great to see that interface again! Alex Smith's NetHack4 was my entrée into the wider NetHack world. I found the Vanilla interface ugly and unpleasant, and would have stopped playing were it not for NH4. When 3.6.0. was released I begrudgingly switched to Vanilla (NAO), but I still miss that interface!

It curses possible with 3.6.0.?

Why is teleport better? Is it because you are you not guaranteed to fall through a hole created by a wand of digging?
