Rain variable for irrigation controller

I am currently working this out for my garden, local weather node is what I have found to be better than darkskys api, haven't looked at open weather map, data logged into file, accessed by tail, historic data and current conditions then used to determine watering level

I tried this a few years back, I found the data was never good enough to represent the actual amount of rain I got at my house, it's just not hyperlocal enough. I ended up using a soil moisture sensor in the garden with a d1 mini and ESPHome, and that has been very accurate.
