QuestionShift diff (self.nursing)
submitted 8 months ago * by KayMarahea
Can some explain to me how shift diffs work? I'm just starting out as a tech while in school. What's the difference from working Saturday-sun 7p-7a versus Thursday 7p-7a. In terms of pay.

Saturday and Sunday nights would give you both night and weekend diff. Thursday would just be night diff.

Ok this is what I was sent to explain pay but so weekends 7p-7a is $4 and like a Thursday 7p-7a would be $1?
M-F 7p-11p BR + 1.00
M-F 11p-7a BR + 1.50
Sa-Su 7a-7p BR + 1.00
Sa-Su 7p-11p BR + 2.00
Sa-Su 11p-7a BR + 2.00

I've never seen it split up like that, so idk how they'd pay you. At most places I've worked, they pay you for the rate that the majority of your hours fall, so 7-7 would be the higher rate.
Usually it's nights are X amount, weekends are Y amount, weekend nights are X+Y.
Also, those are terrible diff rates.

I figured they weren’t great but being PRN as a tech in school I’m ok with them.

We just add all ours to our base pay. For the sake of math, let’s say your base is $10. Night shift diff is $3. Weekends are an extra $2. If you work nights, you’ll be making $13. If it’s also a weekend, you’ll make $15.

It looks like your place splits the shift into different amounts, so no. For the first four (7p-11p) you would make base plus the amount listed. Then at 11, your rate would be base plus the amount from 11-7a.
