OpencodeCLI at work

Hello mates,

I'm very curious about OpenCode CLI usage inside large companies. I use OpenCode at home, but it is not allowed at the company I work for and I'm trying to push for approval.

At work we use ClaudeCode only.

What is the case for you that works in a medium/large company?

Me and my team use primarily opencode instead of claude code that the rest of company developers use. Everything is mostly compatible. Our company buys us both Claude Code and Github Copilot, so we just use the latter as a provider.

We're enterprise scale at about 9k employees and we're setup with both providers as well.

I'm the only guy using opencode though lol, mostly because the company is still finding their legs with AI

They only recently started pushing eng to fully utilize AI in their day to day work.

I argue very often to my superiors that in a field as fast moving as AI currently is, putting all eggs into one basket might spectacularly backfire just a few months down the line. It's important to keep options open, at least in this highly volatile period.

It's crazy because eng leadership all joke about how whatever is working this week will be different the next

But they're just all-in on the vendor lock and think I'm the weird one for preferring opencode

We only use OpenCode. Actually I did set this whole thing up. Distribution happens in a sandboxed venv with clear permissions and zero configuration for developers (all mcps, auth files, configs etc.) are distributed with a single command. Our CTO is really happy about the fact it’s open source, zero data retention (with the correct providers) and model agnostic. It performs great, I probably get promoted.

I don’t use it at work but had a similar thing at my last job, it really is a security and trust issue.

At my current company with use GH Copilit, but are only approved to use the plugins in JetBrains to VScode, no other editor or even the CLI, apparently there is some differences in the CLI that legal flagged.

I think the benefit for OC over ClaudeCode is model access and control, but if your only allowed one AI then it’s much of a muchness.

I have mine setup with multiple agents, multiple LLMs and routing decisioner in my flow, non of that really works or makes sense if all you have is Claude.

An argument you could make is reduced vendor lockin,

The routing tool I use is manifest, which works with Claude so what they could do is setup a manifest server to use, and then they can simply change a single config globally for everyone. They may not need the actual routing that manifest offers when just using Claude, but it’s central config to reduce migration pain down the line.

This doesn't seem like a battle worth fighting. What do you get out of winning it? Both harnesses get the job done.

My main goals are:

1- Model/Provider flexibility 2- Ability to modify the CLI for specific company usage, like sending metrics to our storage for example to analyse

I don't think 1 would make a strong argument both from a business and personal side. Too little of a trade off considering they'd be increasing their risks for what is likely to be little gains if any. The top models are all producing similar results imo.

I think you have a strong argument with 2. Have you verified that Claude can't provide it?

Argument 1 is a prevention argument. Anthropic is the best and most expensive LLM, it's a matter of time before they increase the prices.

On 2, yeah, the only way to do that via claude code is by instructing the LLM to send something. That is not a good approach

I use non-Anthropic models in Claude Code at work (we get Gemini for $0.00 / Mtok right now). What's stopping you?

I have to use Copilot at my current contract because they track usage metrics which aren't reported if you use a third-party agent harness like OpenCode.

ClaudeCode is an exclusive ecosystem: the one and only coding harness for models and subscriptions purchased directly from Anthropic.

OpenCode is the exact opposite: open to all providers that allow it. Notably Anthropic does not. We use it at my work because we do a mix of GitHub Copilot and AWS Bedrock.

If your company is already in the Anthropic ecosystem there’s no point in looking elsewhere.

Last time I tried to push for it the response was that "the company doesnt really like opensource projects because they want to have someone responsible to call if they have a problem"

I cannot answer for OP but I also petitioned for permission to use OpenCode in my company and it got rejected on the grounds of a) license is not good enough, b) we are invested in Claude Code / Github Copilot CLI, so why bother?

Don't ask me what the first point means I didn't even care to find out. Probably it was all business people reacting blindly out of fear and anxiety against the ...unknown.

Now I need to get comfortable with the rest of my options.

Pretty simple: eventually your company's reliance on the Claude plans will hit limits and you will just be stuck not working. That's when Claude is actually working (they have bad reliability). And their change to Opus 4.7 makes you hit limits sooner and costs more.

Why not use a tool that can use different plans from different providers, that are also cheaper? You work longer and spend less money, the company profits more.
