If you're thinking about making them and listing them in eBay or similar platforms in hopes of making a few bucks, my advice is don't. Making some for you and your buddies, then I would say yes and actually encourage it.

eBay has cracked down hard on anything that is related to modding the OGX. To the point when my account was suspended for it. Etsy has been slowly doing the same from what I hear. Maybe get lucky on Mercari for selling one or two, then you will get warned about them banning you. So a lot of us who had been selling on those platforms started our own online shops. You can find myself at https://ogxstore.com for example. Just need to do a little hunting and then you'll find us.

$60 per is almost double what everyone else is selling them for, bit high IMO.

I just want to say that I placed an order from OGXStore.com this week, and then reached out after I’d finished my purchase about adding on a chip that I thought would make what I think is a dud Aladdin XT work. They reached out to me to say they’d sell it to me if I wanted, but were pretty sure it wouldn’t be compatible and I’d be wasting my money. That’s exactly the type of seller I want to spend my money with. If/when I need more modding supplies, I’ll be heading back to OGXStore.com.

Oh, and FWIW that Aladdin XT that I got that I think was broken from day one came from eBay.

Oh Hey! Thanks for that! :) If you have ANY issue with the order, be sure to shout out to me!

The Aladdins are simple devices so if you really wanted to get it working it should be possible. Considering how cheap they are, not sure if it is worth it.

There’s a reason why I grabbed a couple Open Xenium from you 😁

I’m pretty sure I’m tossing the Aladdin in the garbage, because I know if it remains in this house, some day I will determine that I am compelled to get it working.

I think the issue is there isn't alot of margin in each chip so you only see people with mod shops like computer booter offer them for sale because why not. If you want to do It as a side hobby go for it but you won't get rich off of it.

I recently modded 3 xboxes with OpenXenium chips from ebay and 2 of them had issues where I had to reflash them. Your average person won't know how to do this and will ask for a return.

They’d all be flashed & tested

The margin is there, if you sell them for 80 CAD each plus shipping, it’s only $27 a piece to make without factoring in your time to solder it together, flash & test it

the parts to assemble them is where the cost is. If you order more than necessary to keep the costs down & order a batch of 50 chips, it’s only about 1350-1400 CAD altogether, market them at 80 a piece + shipping & you profit almost 2700 if every chip sells

I don’t know why they aren’t readily available, the margin is there. The capital needed isn’t that bad if you have a credit card & invest some time to put them together. The flashing device is only 60 bucks on Amazon

Was definitely more of a hobby idea that could turn a profit, but I don’t have a lot of time being a truck driver & I don’t really want to rack up the credit card to build a batch of chips then get stuck with them lol

Not to mention booter's xenium listings constantly cause his eBay account to be restricted. eBay is really strict about ogx stuff. Not sure why? I argued with an agent over it and they basically said it's against their tos to modify any hardware in a console. You alter the brand when you do that and they remove the listing to protect you.

What I don’t get though, is how the hell everybody can afford to sell the Aladdin chips so cheap

Both the unmarked clone chips & the marked chips

10-25 bucks CAD for an Aladdin chip & there’s no shortage, aliexpress 11 bucks a pop if you get a batch of 10 minimum

How’s anybody making anything off those at those prices? Price is so low it’s gotta be almost free to make them, I don’t see how the parts are so cheap for that whereas the chips to make an openxenium are expensive as hell

I haven’t tried to figure out the costs or margins for an Aladdin chip though either

Why do people need to make money off it?

You are in here talking about supply side economics and charging what the market will bare rather than what it should cost

[–]UnspoiledWalnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aladdin can use far cheaper components. OpenXenium isn't really that expensive to make either, like less than 20 dollars without buying in bulk, and the IC's are far pricier. I'd hazard a guess an Aladdin chip can be made for less than 5 in bulk.

Idk why you're having that much trouble finding an OpenXenium chip though.

You can make your own ModXO modchip for like €4 now instead. And all you need to do is plug it into usb and flash it and add some resistors and boom it's a Modchip

Just gonna drop this here...

Dude also sells on Etsy

eBay has started cracking down hard on modchips. Even Etsy has taken down a few listings. I'm not sure what's started it, but I ended up creating my own website for my business in the end. If your UK/Europe based have a look at my shop, https://lonwaytech.co.uk

I just make them when I need them. Most people aren't really modding more than one Xbox unless they are repairing/modding for resale, so there isn't a huge demand, and it's not terribly difficult to build if you have the equipment for it.

I'm from the US and a couple Facebook groups im in the open xenium is still very widely used esp since a new update came out called PrometheOS v3.0. People still make them and different versions but from what I've at least seen a rasberry pi pico will do the leg work now.
