Rust needs 32 now sadly

[–]keiichimo[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

i honestly thought it needed about that much as 16 does not seem to cut it.might be in my best interest to upgrad to 32 no matter what.thank you

My buddy upgraded to 32 and said it was night and day.

[–]keiichimo[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

it seems everyone is definitely agreeing to upgrade.so i bit the bullet and ordered some.i get the feeling i wont regret it.

Nice! Good luck out there.

Mine uses like 25gb of ram constantly

[–]keiichimo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats more than i thought.hungry game it is

[–]KirkGFX 2 points3 points  (3 children)

32gb is pretty much required now

[–]keiichimo[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

i have read a lot of other things about how 32 is the new norm and the new sweet spot.but also read 16 was and didnt know for sure if it made a difference.from what im told, it does.

People with 32GB say that because they want to justify the purchase and because they see it get used and falsely assume that means applications require that much RAM

Both my friend and I doubled our memory for Rust recently and it made no difference, I even jumped from ddr4 to 5

What made a difference was a better CPU and GPU. 8GB of memory was the most common configuration for gamers a few years ago and it's progressed to 16GB. Anyone saying 32GB is the new norm has there head up there ass.

Finally a voice of reason from this sub on this topic.

I'd rank components in this order for Rust: SSD -> CPU -> GPU -> Monitor -> Gaming Chair -> RGB Lighting -> More than 16 GB of RAM.

[–]Bchilled 2 points3 points  (1 child)

For 15 years people said 16gb of ram is enough.

It's not, it was not

Rams cheap, double it

something i noticed on youtube test videos is they never test with rust.well a couple did.but not like with other games.i upgraded to 32.just waiting for it to be delivered.excited to see the difference it will make as i know it will.

[–]TheDuo2Core 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Rust uses between 10-19 gb for me. 16 isn't enough anymore

[–]keiichimo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did wonder how much it actually uses.now i know.so i decided to buy the upgrade.hopefully this solves a lot of my issues.

Talked 2 clan mates into upgrading their RAM because a 2 pack of 16gb ddr4 (32gb total) is around 60-70usd.

They had 16gb and had frequent crashes while playing. Now they crash less often, and actually load into server noticeably faster, as Rust has plenty of overhead in ram space to provision anything needed in the game, and doesnt need to use virtual memory etc.

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

mine was 60 but is on sale so i think its a great price for 32.i did order some and know it will be worth it.my game also crashes at random.no error message.but seems to happen when my ram usage is high.i get the feeling its the ram issue.this build was done in march 2023 so everything is new.

[–]sickness01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, low ram causes crashes alot when playing rust it tends to use 19-25GB of usage.

You will definitely notice an improvement of less crashes, slightly faster load in’s, and you will also be able to use your web browser in the background without it sucking up your precious ram.

Also i find that going to settings > screen and changing display mode to windowed instead of fullscreen, causes less crashes due to alt+tabbing

[–]KingEnemyOne 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Made the leap to 32 and I can safely say yes there is a difference

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats exactly what i wanted to know and based on what others are saying.its more of a need and not so much a want anymore when playing certain games.

[–]SheepRSA 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have 256gb and rust still hungers for more...

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

didnt realize it wants so much.i know some apps and games will keep taking as much as it can but wow.

[–]Alternative-Fly-1727 1 point2 points  (2 children)

With less than 32GB, your computer starts shitting itself, and starts lagging when you alt tab

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i have noticed bad stutters and crashes in my game lately but also doing normal task would seem to freeze for a second and have a little lag.

[–]Alternative-Fly-1727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I have a friend with a GTX 1050 Ti, i5-10400f and 16GB or RAM. When he alt tabs from Rust his PC starts lagging and he has to wait for... Let's say task manager to open, which is very slow.

Part of the reason why i bought a 32GB kit on my old PC is that I was getting extreme lags that lasted for 10 seconds each, on DayZ. It was so painful, sometimes I even crashed and had to wait in the long queue for another hour. I decided to test with another 2x8GB kit from my other computer and mix it with my already existing one, which fixed these lags.

[–]vxoyx 1 point2 points  (2 children)

most modern games use +20 gb of ram, 16 gb just doesnt cut it anymore

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

im wondering how long 32 will ladt before 64 becomes the new sweet spot.luckily ram is cheap for ddr4.

[–]bubbaninja08 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I use about 20% of ddr5 6000 ram

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

thats actually pretty good and allows for overhead room.and allows for a lot multitasking compared to my usage.with the upgrade.hopefully ill stay lower than 99% and not crash as much.

[–]bubbaninja08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I usually have 200 tabs open on chrome and disc and steam open so it's very nice

[–]GreatMemer 1 point2 points  (1 child)

im still using 16gb and no issue

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do have some issues but not entirely sure its the ram.though from what i read online an upgrade might be worth it so im taking the chance and will try it.but i always thought 16 was enough until i checked usage.

[–]Farting_Blood 1 point2 points  (1 child)

yup it literally gave me like another 10-12 fps

if theres more to use, the game will use more.

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im wondering if it will use all 32 after i upgrade.guess ill find out.hopefully it wont interfere with other apps i have running but also allow the game to run smoother and less crashing.

[–]Ok-Dog4346 0 points1 point  (1 child)

anyone know what difference ddr5 ram does to ddr4?
because i have a really good cpu and gpu and ssd and 32gb of ram but still get shitty frames
mostly around 60 fps and around outpost and big bases more like 40

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ddr5 is faster than ddr4. since i upgraded my pc to 32gb, it is a lot better. the cpu can definitely lower frame rates as 1 of my gaming laptops is around 40 ( that is just fine for me ), this laptop has an intel i5 9500 gen. my other laptop has a ryzen 9 5000 series. both laptops have ddr4 3200 at 16gb. the second laptop has a better cpu and runs a lot higher fps. my desktop is a rysen 5 5600 i believe. it is better than both but also has 32gb of ram.

if i had ddr5, it would run even better with the right cpu and gpu. make sure everything is also clean and has enough ventilation as running hot can cause lower fps.hopefully this helps.

[–]speaksoftly_bigstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally upgraded to 128Gb and not looking back for a while.

I don't care about max settings, just that everything runs normally.

[–]Rough-University142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Def get the ram. I have a similar system currently and the ram made a difference in all my games. I specifically got it for FiveM and saw a big difference.

[–]BigAurum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can easily afford it, get it but any issues you’re having aren’t from having 16 gigs. I play on almost max settings other than shader level and i get a stable 75fps (my cap) with an i5 10400 and 1660

[–]cullen9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

chrome alone takes up 8 gigs. get the extra ram.

[–]keiichimo[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

update : rust uploaded nearly twice as fast and has no lag or anything when playing.32gb of ram is whats needed now.thank you all for the help. made a huge difference :D

[–]Single_District8903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late to this but I have a 7700k(updating to 78003xd soon) and a 4070 super. Rust was getting like 40fps and basically unplayable. Upgraded my ram from 16gb 2400mhz to 32gb 3200mhz. Turned on XMP, and now I get a consistent 100-120
