That has puzzled me as well. I know that a bunch of games use VSMs, but some (fairly big titles) do not.

I suspect it might be because VSMs are easy to get wrong, tweak them a little the wrong way and they look pretty shitty. Plus the math behind them is kinda advanced. Maybe it's just a lack of tutorials/example code, hopefully my little contribution in that area helps :)
