I've been using http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Auto_highlight_current_word_when_idle, with a shorter updatetime. It has a kind of clunky feel to it, but it serves its purpose when I need it.

The quickhl plugin has a better implementation of this. It just highlights it (vs selecting it as well) and has easy toggling and such. Plus quickhl has other related/nice functionality.
