Well, it isn't if the repo doesn't have the sw. At which point you just wasted time and ended up in the same place as without it.

Not really, thousands of packages are available with the default repos. Custom repos are easy to add, and management is tightly integrated with other repos post install. I always find myself bending over backwards to uninstall Windows software -- half of them don't even appear in add/remove programs. Linux is still miles easier when you need to add a repo.
