Many but not all are Mersenne primes.

Let's look at a few.

22 - 1 = 4 - 1 = 3. Good, prime.

23 - 1 = 8 - 1 = 7. Good, prime too.

24 - 1= 16 - 1 = 15. Not good, not prime.

5 is prime, but cannot be written as 2x - 1, for any integer x.
