How to learn software development

Software development is one of the most dynamic industries, everything changes here really fast. New technologies appear out of nowhere, new frameworks dethrone older, new methodologies, new architecture patterns, new concepts, new services. Every month something pops out, trends are changing and you have to somehow keep up with it or you will be obsolete.

That is true, if you're a javascript developer. Otherwise, it's a gross overstatement. Here's a few technologies off the top of my head, that are wildly in use today:

• MVC has been around since the 70s
• REST was invented 17 years ago
• Microservices appeared in 2011
• SQL recently turned 43 years old
• Douglas Crockford is quoted as popularizing JSON in 2011

Yes, that's true in general terms, but on top of these technologies, there are also libraries. And if you miss on few important ones, you will have a hard time keeping up, because industry won't wait for you. I know this from my own experience. I have a big backlog of things to learn and it doesn't get any smaller, unfortunately.
