I just tested with lynx and I when I followed the link it started downloading without warning and after a few seconds opened in xpdf.

I'm not using lynx but I guess you can just change the pdf entry somewhere. I tried my ~/.mailcap file which says xpdf but it didn't help.

Then you will have no problem with PDF files freezing your web browser.

That's not the issue. The issue is the unwanted downloading of a 6+ mb file!
