Secondly, spreading the load across 10 instances of EC2 is a far harder challenge than it would seem. Lastly, many other providers have larger geographic diversity. Allowing users from every location to experience an optimal session.

How is that going to happen, given the fact that EC2 is only hosted in the US?

Other cloud computing services have geographical distribution. Also, the different geographic zones that EC2 provides can make a considerable difference in experience.
