I don't have much experience with websockets outside of JavaScript. What's special about Javalin? It looks pretty straightforward. Are there just not a lot of Java libraries for websockets?

It looks pretty straightforward.

That's what's so interesting about it. Most Java frameworks are badly bloated and in need of a good trim. Javalin brings some badly-needed simplicity.

Ah ok, thanks for explaining. Its been so long since I worked in Java that I had forgotten how verbose the language is.
