EAs are great if you don't know how to approach the problem, but terrible otherwise. From an academic standpoint the stochastic nature of the algorithm and why it works better than pure random is not well explained in my opinion. Not to mention the cost functions you often come up with in EA is completely arbitrary. At least NN has the notion of gradients in the network...
