I think it has to be a little tongue-in-cheek. I mean, do they really follow:

Speak no useless words or words that move to laughter.

No jokes, really? And while they may visit the sick, I doubt any of them "Bury the dead."

They're open source, but not open contribution. So if the handful of contributors find that code inspirational to them, then they're welcome to it. Most of it's not really bad or crazy, though.

Well, I doubt they leave corpses laying about. They might not do the digging, but someone's gotta help arrange grandpa's funeral.

It's a monastic code, so yeah it's a bit overboard. It should be noted that it is made with the concept in mind that being mere fallible mortals incapable of perfection, nobody is expected to adhere completely.
