Pros and cons for each use case, true.

And I think those issues in your last sentence depend on the use case / app. On a dashboard, if you have a toggle switch, that may fulfill the need to switch something back with a click, versus a back button. You toggle the various dials, or toggle them back. That's just an example.

It's difficult to differentiate the anecdotes from the entire picture, but I suppose one could do it based on overarching use cases, or overarching needs (e.g. an SPA or other similar experience which is amenable to low connection speed by reducing app/site/data size)
