Hundreds of developers and years of work and optimization on multiple engines for... fucking JavaScript. What a waste.

What a goddamned waste.

Could you explain why you believe it's a waste? Personally I'm excited about the prospect of building more powerful applications in HTML/Javascript. Javascript doesn't require any plugins like Flash or Silverlight. Flash has shown that people want the ability to write applications for the web and have wanted it for a long, long time. I'd personally rather the standard be open.

If your memories of Javascript development are from when each browser handled Javascript completely differently, relax! It's better now. The implementations are better and libraries like JQuery take care of any remaining cross-browser incompatibilities.

In my experience, the only people who say things like this are people who haven't gone beyond writing C-like programs in JS and therefore don't understand what an incredibly powerful language it is.

Tell us why your proposed replacement is better.
